Steve brings unrivalled media and political experience to SEC Newgate after more than two decades working for Australia’s leading newspapers. As a leading figure in the Canberra press gallery, Steve has built an extensive network across the political landscape and within the federal public service.
As a Senior Adviser with SEC Newgate, Steve consults to some of Australia’s leading corporations, providing advice about federal government relations and media engagement. He also provides high-level strategic advice to a number of Federal Government agencies.
Steve understands the nexus between business and Canberra like few others. He is trusted across the political aisle and maintains strong relationships with senior members of the Press Gallery.
During the past twelve years, Steve has delivered high-level media training to some of Australia’s leading public servants including the team of Deputy Chief Medical Officers – led by Nick Coatsworth and Michael Kidd – who provided regular media updates during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has also worked for the Australian Tax Office, Defence Housing Australia, Future Fund, NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, Therapeutic Goods Administration and the Australian Cyber Security Centre.
An excellent public speaker, Steve is a Director of the National Press Club. He is co-author of the best-selling political novels The Marmalade Files, The Mandarin Code and The Shadow Game, which inspired the global Netflix smash hit Secret City.
